ज्युलि अँड ज्युलिया (Julie & Julia ), 2009

(नोरा एफ्रॉन दिग्दर्शित दोन सत्य कथांवर आधारित 2009 मध्ये प्रदर्शित एक अमेरिकन सिनेमा)

पाककलेची आवड असणाऱ्या ज्युलि पॉवेल Julie Powell आणि ज्युलिया चाईल्ड Julia Child या दोन अमेरिकन गोऱ्या महिलांची ही गोष्ट आहे. अ‍ॅलेक्स पुद्रहोम सह ज्युलिया चाईल्ड (1912-2004) लिखित ‘माय लाईफ इन फ्रान्स’ आणि ज्युलि पॉवेल (जन्म 1973) लिखित ‘ज्युलि व ज्युलिया’ या दोन पुस्तकांवर आधारित ह्या सिनेमाचे कथानक आहे. हा सिनेमा आपल्याला 1949 आणि 2002 अशा वेगवेगळ्या कालखंडातील अमेरिका आणि युरोपात घडणाऱ्या ज्युलि आणि ज्युलिया ह्या दोघींच्या कथा दाखवतो.

ज्युलि पॉवेल आणि ज्युलिया चाईल्ड या दोघींमध्ये बरीचशी साम्ये आहेत. ह्या गोऱ्या स्त्रिया मध्यमवर्गीय आणि उच्च मध्यमवर्गीय कुटुंबातील आहेत. या दोघी विवाहित स्त्रिया असून आपापल्या नवऱ्यासोबत राहत आहेत आणि दोघींनाही मुलंबाळ नाहीत. दोघींचेही नवरे प्रेमळ आणि त्यांच्या करियरसाठी प्रोत्साहन देणारे आहेत. ज्युलि कॉल सेंटरची सरकारी नोकरी करत आहे, तर ज्युलियाने कंटाळून सरकारी नोकरी सोडून दिली आहे. ज्युलि तिच्या कामात खुश नाहीये, घरी आल्यावर कामाचा विसर पडावा म्हणून ती वेगवेगळे पदार्थ बनवून पाहते, कारण कुकिंग ही तिची आवड आहे. तिला लिखाणाची देखील आवड आहे, मात्र तिच्या लिखाणाला कुणी प्रकाशक मिळत नसल्यामुळे ती लेखनाकडे गांभीर्याने पाहत नसते.

दुसरीकडे चाळीशी गाठलेल्या ज्युलियाने वैतागून सरकारी जॉब सोडला असल्यामुळे, आता नेमकं काय करावं याचा ती विचार करत असते; कारण तिला तिच्या भोवतीच्या इतर स्त्रियांसारखं फक्त घरात बसायचं नाहीये. ती इतर काही गोष्टी शिकण्याचा प्रयत्न करते. मात्र आपली खरी आवड पदार्थ बनवणे आणि खाणे ही आहे, हे तिच्या लक्षात येते. त्यावेळी ती फक्त पुरुषांचीच मक्तेदारी असलेल्या व्यवसायिक कुकींगच्या क्लासला ऍडमिशन घेते. सर्व पुरुष विद्यार्थ्यांमध्ये एकटी महिला विद्यार्थिनी बनून ती कुकिंगचे धडे घेते.

फक्त चांगले पदार्थ शिकणे आणि नवऱ्याला रोज खाऊ घालणे, तेवढ्यापुरते मर्यादित न राहता दोघींनाही स्वतःचं हे कौशल्य जगासमोर यावं असं वाटत असतं. ज्युलि तिच्या अगोदरच्या लिखाणाला प्रकाशक मिळत नसल्यामुळे यावेळी कुकिंगविषयी ऑनलाईन ब्लॉग लिहायचं ठरवते. ‘ज्युलिया चाईल्ड’च्या पुस्तकातील पदार्थ बनवून त्याविषयीचे अनुभव ती तिच्या ब्लॉगवर लिहिते. ‘मदतीला नोकर नसलेल्या अमेरिकन स्वयंपाक्यांसाठी’ (For Servantless American Cooks) असा आशय नजरेसमोर ठेवून ज्युलि तिचा ब्लॉग सुरू करते. जिथे तिच्या ब्लॉगला हळूहळू चांगला प्रतिसाद मिळत जातो. तर ज्युलिया देखील तिच्या शेफ मैत्रिणींच्या बरोबरीने ‘अमेरिकेतील स्वयंपाक्यांसाठी’ पुस्तक लिहिण्यात आणि त्याला प्रकाशक मिळवण्यात यशस्वी होते. या पुस्तकामुळे आणि टीव्हीवरील एका कुकिंग शोजच्या माध्यमातून ज्युलिया चाईल्डला खूप प्रसिद्धी मिळते आणि युरोप-अमेरिकेत ती घराघरात पोहचते.

इथे लक्षात घेण्याची एक गोष्ट म्हणजे, जेव्हा ज्युलिया कुकिंगचा प्रोफेशनल क्लास जॉईन करायचं ठरवते, तेव्हा तिच्या वडिलांना ती गोष्ट अजिबात आवडत नाही; ते तिला कुचेष्टेने स्वयंपाकाला बाई ठेवण्यासाठी पैसे देऊ का असं विचारतात. तर दुसरीकडे, जरी ज्युलिचा नवरा प्रेमळ आणि सपोर्टिव्ह असला, तरी ज्युलि जेव्हा रेसिपीज बनवणे, त्याविषयी ब्लॉग लिहिणे ही कामे झोकून देऊन करते, त्यावेळी ती संसाराकडे आणि नवऱ्याकडे दुर्लक्ष करतेय अशी तक्रार करत, एरीक (ज्युलिचा नवरा) तिच्याशी भांडताना दिसतो.

ज्युलि आणि ज्युलियाच्या जीवनात सर्वात महत्वाची समानता दिसते, ती स्वतःची आवड जोपासणे, स्वतःला आवडेल त्या कामात मन झोकून चिकाटीने काम करणे, स्वतःचं एक स्थान निर्माण करण्यासाठी धडपड करणे.

This movie is a story of two white American women; who are interested in cooking, named Julie Powell (1973 – Present) and Julia Child (1912 – 2004). This movie is based on two books, one is Julie Powell’s book ‘Julie & Julia’ and the second one is Julia Child, along with Alex Prud’homme’s book ‘My Life in France’. This movie shows us simultaneously two stories of different timelines and from different places (Europe and America).

There are many similarities between Julie Powell and Julia Child. Both are white American women, from middle and upper middle class, married, living with their husbands and both couples have no children. Both husbands are loving and supportive in their carriers. Julie is doing a government job in a call centre, and Julia had quit her government job, because she was not happy doing that. Julie is also not happy at her job, so after coming home she tries new recipes for some relief from her work. Apart from cooking she loves writing too, but previously when she didn’t get a publisher for her writing, she stopped taking her writing seriously.

On the other hand, Julia is crossing her 40s and quit her government job, so now she is looking for something new to do. She doesn’t want to stay at home without doing anything, like the other women around her. She tried to learn some new things. But when she realized cooking and eating is her main passion, she joined male dominated field of professional cooking classes, where she was the only woman student among all male students.

Not just learning new recipes and feeding to husband, both Julie and Julia wanted to show their skills to the world. Julia Child succeeded to write and publish a book for ‘American Cooks’, with her co-writers. Due to this book and hosting a cooking show on television; Julia reached out to houses of Europeans and Americans. On the other hand, in spite of finding publishers, this time Julie decided to write an online blog. Below the tagline ‘For servantless American cooks’, she started her blog. Which was about the recipes she tried from Julia Child’s book. Gradually Julie got responses and praise from her blog readers.

One thing to take into consideration is that, when Julia decided to join a professional cooking class, her father didn’t like it at all. He asks her disgustingly, whether she needs money to keep a servant for cooking. On the other hand, though Julie’s husband Eric is loving and supportive; but when Julie started fully concentrating on cooking and writing a blog, that time Eric seems arguing and complaining about how Julie is neglecting home, their married life and to him too.

The important similarity between Julie and Julia’s life is that, pursuing their own passion, and trying hard to do so, struggling to make a place for themselves in the world and at same time being a good wife at home.
